Labour Education Centre
Originally created in 1987 and operating now under the aegis of Toronto & York Region Labour Council, the Labour Education Centre offers Literacy and Basic Skills classes for unemployed workers, as well as a program in Labour Studies. They customize workshops on union and equity matters for unions and other equity groups. Among their programmed activities is the popular interactive game HOG (The History of Globalization).
The Labour Education Centre is located in the Ontario Federation of Labour building at 15 Gervais Drive at the Don Mills & Eglinton intersection in Toronto.
Education in Europe
From kindergarten to university, national education systems are being transformed. Privatisation is increasing. ‘Choice’ and ‘diversity’ – codenames for the working of market forces – provide a new model of school organisation. Teaching and learning are guided and regulated by central government, in the name of ‘standards’ and competitiveness. Faced with these changes, the movements which, in an earlier era, fought for egalitarian reform, are on the defensive; even where educational provision is expanding, class and ethnic inequalities remain.
People For Education
People for Education is an independent parent-led organization, working to improve public education in Ontario's English, Catholic and French schools.
In 1996, we began as part of the parent association at a downtown Toronto school and have grown to become a provincial organization. We believe public education is the foundation of a civil society.
Rethinking Schools
Rethinking Schools began as a local effort to address problems such as basal readers, standardized testing, and textbook-dominated curriculum. Since its founding in 1986, it has grown into a nationally prominent publisher of educational materials, with subscribers in all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and many other countries.
The Little Education Report
Doug Little knows the politics of Ontario education. After 35 years as an active reformer he is uniquely qualified to launch The Little Education Report. A working class kid himself, Doug has taught at every level of the Ontario school system from hard scrabble elementary and secondary schools for the urban poor to elite public schools in Toronto’s toniest neighbourhoods. He taught politics in two community colleges and “The Politics of Ontario Education” at York University (2000-2003).
